The Greatest

And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. (Luke 22:24)

This seems at first to be incredible: while living with Jesus, the disciples would be entangled in an argument about which one of them was the greatest. But maybe it hits closer to home than we want to admit.

Christian, Jesus said, "The one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves."

Not only does he gently correct our way of thinking, he is here for our freedom. He is among us as the one who serves. Let's pray.

Lord Jesus, you are the One who serves. Please forgive us for comparing ourselves to one another. Thank you for continuing to expose our ideas of greatness so that we can participate in humility with you.

Help us to not compete with one another. Rather teach us to look to you and follow more closely. Amen.

Today's very great and precious promise

"If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also; if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him." (John 12:26)

We have God's Word on it.
